Dr. Maggie S. Matern is an incoming Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Molecular Biology in the School of Arts and Sciences at Merrimack College. She is a developmental neurobiologist with expertise in auditory systems biology, specializing in the development of sensory cells in the inner ear.

Dr. Matern earned her bachelor’s degree in Genetics from the University of New Hampshire and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Human Genetics and Genomic Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2019. She continued her training with a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University, where she focused on mapping stem cell-derived inner ear organoid development using single cell RNA sequencing. Her research is currently supported by an NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Dr. Matern's long-term goal is to advance our understanding of auditory and vestibular sensory cell development and inspire the next generation of researchers through her teaching and mentorship.
